How to size a gold (XAUUSD) position from your stop-loss

Most traders choose a lot size first and then squeeze the stop-loss to fit. That is backwards. The stop belongs where the market proves your idea wrong, and the position size should follow from it.

Start with the stop, not the lot

A stop-loss has one job: to mark the point where the trade idea no longer holds. On gold that is usually beyond a real structure level, such as a recent swing high or low, not a round number picked because it feels comfortable.

Once the stop is placed, you know the distance in price between your entry and your exit if you are wrong. That distance is the input. The lot size is the output.

The three numbers you need

  • Risk per trade: the share of your account you accept losing if the stop is hit, for example 1%.
  • Stop distance: the price distance from entry to stop.
  • Contract details: your broker's contract size and value per point for XAUUSD, which you find in MetaTrader 5 under the symbol's specification.

The lot size is the money you are willing to risk divided by what one lot would lose over the stop distance.

Why a wider stop means a smaller lot

If the structure forces a wider stop, the lot shrinks so the money at risk stays the same. A wider stop does not mean a bigger loss. It means a smaller position. This is how professional risk managers keep every trade at the same risk, whatever the chart looks like.

What happens on a small account

On a very small account, the calculated lot can fall below the broker's minimum lot. The disciplined answer is to skip the trade, not to round the lot up and risk more than planned. Trade Routes does exactly this: when the lot rounds down to zero, the trade is skipped, which is why we recommend a minimum account of about 500 USD (see our FAQ).

Leverage does not change this

Leverage only changes how much margin a position uses. Your risk is set by your stop and your size. High leverage mainly makes oversizing easier.

How Trade Routes handles it

Trade Routes sizes each trade from the risk percentage you set and the stop distance the strategy places at real swing structure, together with your broker's contract specifications. You set the risk; the software does the arithmetic the same way every time.
